The DBA is partnering with the City of Bloomington and McLean County Regional Planning to bring an exciting new event to Downtown Bloomington. Inspired by the National Park(ing) Day movement, we invite you to help take downtown from “Square to There” by creating some mini-parks that will inhabit one parallel parking space for one day, Friday, Sept. 15, 2017. (You may opt to keep them up thru Saturday, September 16)
Our goal with this event is to highlight shared use of our urban spaces, and recreate the public right-of-way. These temporary installations will coexist with through traffic, and will create a lively, interactive atmosphere filled with people enjoying our historic Downtown.
Here are three ways you can participate (select one)
A) Sponsor a space to advertise your specific business. This option allows you to utilize your park to showcase your business. Suggestions could include Plein Air art, live music, yoga demonstrations, chair massages, etc.
B) Partner with a charity or non-profit to help raise awareness. This option allows you to sponsor a spot on behalf of another organization, such as Wishbone Canine Rescue. That organization would then be responsible for creating the park.
C) Sponsor the event, but donate the space back to someone else to utilize.
Standard Parallel parking spaces measure 8’ x 20’. All park designs should be accessed from the sidewalk, and need to incorporate some type of safety parameter between installation and traffic. The images above show posts and ropes, or bollards. All other design elements are up to you! Be creative, and resourceful!
To participate, please send a letter of interest and your design idea to City of Bloomington Planner Katie Simpson no later than August 14. email your ideas to firstname.lastname@example.org
